Poplarville School District ranks top 10 in the state

Poplarville’s football team isn’t the only thing with bragging rights, the Poplarville School District has something to brag about too. It is ranked one of the top 10 school districts in the state, according to the 2016-17 accountability rankings released by the Mississippi Department of Education Thursday.
After receiving a B rating for the 2015-16 school year, the district was one of only 15 districts in the state to achieve a grade of A for the 2016-17 year.
Not only did the district move up to an A rating, Poplarville High School did as well, after also being given a B the year before. Poplarville High School is one of two A rated high schools in the county with Pearl River Central High School, also improving from a B to an A rating, while Pearl River Central School District remained at a B rating with improved scores.
In fact, about one in five Mississippi school districts showed improvement under the state’s rating system in 2016 through 2017. Some benefited from better graduation rates and test scores and others apparently benefited from changes in the scoring system.
The number of F-rated districts fell from 20 to 9, while the number earning C, B or A ratings all increased, according to accountability data released Thursday by MDE.
Picayune School District, however, did not show improvement and according to the MDE data, actually fell from a B rating in 2015-16 to a C rating for the 2016-17 school year. Picayune High School retained it’s B rating for another year.
