Hornets to face Rockachaws in 2nd round

Poplarville will be on the road in the second round of the Class 4A South State playoffs traveling to Bay St Louis to play the St Stanislaus Rockachaws (6-5).

The matchup is a contrast of styles on offense. The unbeaten and top-ranked Hornets (11-0) have been able to hit the big play the entire season with senior running back Austin Bolton posting 26 TDs and 1,799 yards. Senior fullback Roosevelt Raine ( 783 yards, 6 TDs), junior running back Tyson Holston (647 yards, 7 TDs) and sophomore Cory Knight (602, 10 TDs) have yet to be slowed down and will present a major challenge for the St Stanislaus defense.

The Rockachaws are led senior quarterback Jakob Greer who has thrown for 1,603 yards and 18 TDs, but has also thrown 6 interceptions. Greer has run for 626 yards and 7 TDs. Greer's favorite target is senior has caught 43 passes for 580 yards and 8 TDs.

Greer has ties to Poplarville. He is the grandson of former Hornet head coach Pat Morris.

The last time the teams met was in 2015 with St Stanislaus winning 33-21 in round two of the playoffs. But that was two seasons ago and the rosters are much different for both teams.

The key to this game for Greer and the Rockachaws will come down to having to score a lot of points to beat the Hornets whose point totals are sometimes higher than most high school basketball teams.

On the other side of the ball, the Stanislaus defense could be in for a long night chasing the Hornets backs from sideline to sideline. If Poplarville gets its Wing T offense clicking, this game could get out of hand. Stanislaus must force turnovers and play sound assignment defense to have a chance against the Hornets.

Coverage begins at 6:30pm with the Paw Paw's Campers & Cars Pregame Show. Clay Sweet (play by play), Jeff Lossett (color analyst/stats), and Jason Baker will be on the call of the game on wrjwradio.com and the WRJW smart phone app.
