Picayune Police make two arrests in separate investigations

The Picayune Police Department made an arrest as a result of a routine traffic stop on December 4th. At approximately 1:07pm, an officer conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle at Memorial Blvd and Interstate 59 in reference to improper equipment, cracked windshield according to Assistant Chief Jeremy Magri.

While speaking with the driver, identified as Jose Angel Talavera, age 29, of 494 Salem Road, Picayune, the officer noticed that Talavera was extremely nervous and visibly shaking. Talavera also told the officer many different stories about where he was going at the time. The officer asked Talavera to exit the vehicle and performed an officer safety pat-down. Through speaking with Talavera, the officer learned that Talavera was in possession of hypodermic needles commonly used to inject heroin and two bags of heroin in the vehicle concealed in a glass case on the front passenger seat.

At this time, the officer located a glass case and inside of it was a plastic bag containing an off-white powdery substance believed to be heroin and two aluminum foil packs containing an off-white powdery substance believed to be heroin, and five hypodermic needles.

Talavera was arrested for Possession of a Controlled Substance and transported to the Criminal Justice Center and incarcerated on the said charges according to Magri.

Picayune Police were dispatched to a local restaurant on Memorial Blvd on December 2nd around 1:55 A.M. in reference a suspicious person walking around in the parking lot. While in route to the location, dispatch notified the officer that the suspect may have a gun according to Assistant Chief Jeremy Magri.

When the officer arrived, he noticed a suspect, later identified as Joshua Akiam Nixon, age 27, of 803 Weems Street, Picayune, walking west in the parking. The officer approached Nixon and performed a pat down for officer safety and found a green leafy substance believed to marijuana and a glass pipe containing burnt residue wrapped in a paper towel from Nixon’s front right pants’ pocket.

Magri said that during the search, the officer also found two clear plastic bags in Nixon’s front shirt pocket. One bag contained a green leafy substance believed to be marijuana and a small plastic bag inside that bag that contained a crystal-like substance believed to be crystal methamphetamine. The second bag contained two small plastic baggies with one containing a small white, rock like substance and a pink powder like substance.

Nixon was taken into custody for possession of a controlled substance. The white rock like substance and the pink powder substance was sent to the crime lab for analysis, with further charges pending against Nixon.

Nixon was arrested for two counts of Possession of Controlled Substance (Crystal Methamphetamine), Possession of Marijuana, and Possession of Paraphernalia. He was transported to the Criminal Justice Center and incarcerated on the charges according to Magri.
