Picayune, PRC split district games in basketball

Picayune-- Picayune and Pearl River Central splits their district games on Friday before a packed house at Picayune’s Kelly Wise Memorial Gymnasium. The Maroon Tide prevailed in the boys game 36-23 while the Lady Blue Devils won their 15th game of the season with a 38-31 win.

The Lady Blue Devils (15-3,2-0) built a 23-14 lead at the half behind 12 points from senior guard Harlee Davis. Picayune cut the lead to four points at the start of the last quarter, but that’s as close as they could get it.

PRC made 11 of 12 free throws in the second half to hang on for the win over Picayune (7-12, 0-2). Davis led with PRC with her 14 points and Breyanna Bernard added 9 points.

In the boys’ game, Picayune jumped to a 22-2 lead, but the scrappy Blue Devils battled back and cut the lead to 8 points twice in the second half before the Maroon Tide pulled away.

Sergio Williams paced Picayune with 10 points and he also drew three charges on defense. Marvun Arnold (pictured) had 9 points and 7 rebounds while Kobe Jones finished with 8 points for Picayune (12-9, 2-0).

Xavier Lockhart, Ethan Henley, and Josh Theady each had 4 points for PRC (4-13, 0-2).

In other district action, Hattiesburg beat North Pike 62-60 in boys’ action while Hattiesburg won the girls’ game 71-32.

PRC plays at Poplarville in non-district games on Tuesday.

On Friday, Picayune travels to North Pike while PRC will be at Hattiesburg.
