Camps Hot This Summer at PRCC
Pearl River Community College will be offering over 20 camps this summer for kids ranging from Kindergarten through 8th grade.
These learning opportunities cover a wide range of topics including math and science, art, food safety, wood working, coding, first aid, animal conservation and much more.

Academic summer camps prevent summer learning loss by offering opportunities for students to remain cognitively engaged through the summer months. Of equal importance, Kids College offers opportunities to build leadership skills and self-identity. One goal of camp organizers is to offer various options covering a myriad of subjects and interests. While there is a strong STEM focus, the arts, life sciences, cooking, and team building are also included. The intent is to provide exposure to many areas, thus building vision.

“From the perspective of Pearl River Community College, we are delighted to have elementary and middle school students from our district on campus,” said Melanie Davis, Director of Director of Professional and Community Development. “We enjoy engaging, educating and building rapport with them. Our desire is to encourage and motivate future Wildcats!”
Those at the college are frequently asked, “What do you like about Kids College?” They say the answer is quite simple: The kids! While Kids College is academically focused, their camps allow for plenty of hands-on experiments, open dialogue, trial and error, and collaboration. Camp leaders find themselves amidst the action and the fun.
One grandmother of a camp participant quipped that her grandson was mortified when he learned he was registered for camp. He simply wanted to play video games all summer. However, she was happy to report that when he got to dissect a shark, he changed his mind.
Each camp offers a unique opportunity to delve into unique skills and even potential career opportunities. For example the Innovation Academy camp offered at the PRCC Forrest County Center focuses on hands on innovative STEM material.
“This camp will teach participants about entrepreneurship, engineering and marketing,” says James Collum, Electronics Engineering Instructor and Innovation Academy Camp Director. “Students will have the opportunity to tour real manufacturers and learn from leaders in the field.”

Due to popular demand, the Kids College offerings have increased to 24 camps this year, including two camps at Forrest County Center. With only a few openings remaining, Kids College has proven to be a hot item for summer.
