Council receives update from Rouses on the Picayune store

Michael Williams - WRJW News

During Tuesday’s meeting of the Picayune City Council, Peter Roy, project manager for the new Picayune Rouses Supermarket location gave some details on the project. Roy thanked city leaders and the community for the "red carpet treatment" the company has received during this process.

Roy stated that the new grocery store, which will be in the old Winn Dixie North location, would cover 36,000 square feet and bring much needed new life to the 43 north location. Rouses expects to employ 75-85 full time and 40-50 part time employees when the store is completed. Rouses is making a $15,000,000 dollar investment in the entire shopping center complex.

Roy said that construction should begin in May or June of this year with the proposed opening in Spring of 2024.

Also at last nights meeting, two vacancies were filled with the Picayune School district board of trustees. The vacancies had gone unfilled since Frank Ford left to become a member of the City Council. Reverend Everette Stubbs was chosen to fill Mr. Ford’s unexpired term and Ms. Jan Sweet was appointed to a five year term with the board.
