No. 18 Pearl River scores in bunches in win at Southwest

SUMMIT, Miss. — The No.18 Pearl River men’s soccer team continued its hot start to the season on Friday winning its road contest at Southwest, 5-0.

“We’ve been dominant on set pieces this season and we were able to score some goals from them again today,” said coach Drew Gallant. “We were able to get a lot of people on the scoresheet today.”

Pearl River (5-0 overall; 4-0 MACCC) took an early lead over Southwest (1-4; 0-2), 1-0. Mohamed Diallo (Gulfport) was fouled in the box and took advantage of it by placing his penalty kick in the back of the net.

Retsin Kabambala (Mobile, Ala.; Murphy) soon doubled the advantage by smashing a goal into the back of the net to make the score 2-0.

Dustin Cuevas (Picayune; Hancock) was able to put another Wildcat goal on the board to make it 3-0.

Diallo picked up his second goal of the day to finish with a brace and put the Wildcats up 4-0.

Andre Nicholson (Kingston, Jamaica; Clarendon College) capped off the Pearl River scoring making the game 5-0 in the process.

Southwest tried to get a goal back later in the match, but a big save from reigning MACCC Goalkeeper of the Week John Bowman (Bay St. Louis; Bay) secured the shutout victory.

“John made a huge save in a one versus one situation when we got exposed at the back,” said Gallant.
