Picayune cruises past West Harrison in region game

Picayune- Smothering defense, a solid run game, and Brady Robertson’s pinpoint passing propelled Picayune to a 35-7 win over the West Harrison Hurricane at Lee-Triplett Stadium. The win moves the Maroon Tide’s record to 2-0 in Region play and 5-2 overall.


After forcing a three and out, Picayune wasted little time in putting points on the scoreboard. On the second play of the possession, Darrell Smith raced 55 yards for the touchdown and Morgan Craft kicked the point after for a 7-0 lead with 9:48 on the clock.


After two more punts by West Harrison and one by the Maroon Tide in between the two by the Hurricanes, Picayune got the ball at its 24. On second down, Robertson connected with J.B. McWilliams for a 29 pass to the West Harrison 41. Two plays later, Robertson found B.J. Ducre for a 27 yard reception putting the ball at the Hurricane 12 yard line. Two plays later, Niquis Ratcliff (pictured below) ran untouched around right end for a 10 yard touchdown run with 2:04 left in the quarter. Craft converted the extra point for a 14-0 lead.

Robertson put the last points of the first half on the board with 16 yard touchdown pass to Jamonta Waller with :43 left. Craft was true again to make it 21-0.


On the first possession of the third quarter, Robertson connected with Smith in the left flat and Smith streaked by the Hurricane defenders for a 49 yard touchdown. Craft’s point after made it 28-0 with 10:31.


Ratcliff added another touchdown when he broke three tackles on an 11 yard run with 4:10 left in the game.


With a hot clock in effect and Picayune substituting freely, West Harrison scored with 2:25 left.


Robertson finished 5 of 7 for 147 yards passing. Smith had 135 yards on 16 carries.


The Maroon Tide defense was led by Amarion Tyson with 8 tackles and 2 tackles for loss. McWiliams and Logan Hall each had 7 tackles and 1 tackle for loss.


Picayune travels to Long Beach on Friday.
